Matt Prater’s clutch-as-can-be NFL career essentially began by putting accurate kicks through the uprights in the Mile High, and 19 years later, the strong-legged kicker — now in Buffalo colors — discovered that very little had changed. In need of a 50-yard kick to save the Bills’ entire season, Prater arrived with a veteran’s cool, forcing overtime with a through-the-middle boot that prompted a metaphorical sigh of relief throughout the city of Buffalo. A storybook victory wasn’t to be, as the Denver Broncos’ heroics won out in a 33-30 finish on Jan. 17, 2026. Nonetheless, Prater rose to the occasion against his former team, going a perfect three-of-three on both field goals and extra points.
