One year before New York’s All-Pro tight end famously decided to powerfully carry red-jerseyed 49ers defenders along for a ride, Mark Bavaro discovered a different way of introducing San Francisco to the back of his No. 89 jersey. Opting for flair and creativity after speedily locating a wide-open middle-of-the-field seam, Bavaro balanced himself into a smooth, one-handed 18-yard touchdown snag, prompting both euphoria from the Giants Stadium faithful, as well as a double-digit second quarter lead. Personifying trademark toughness throughout Dec. 29, 1985’s 17-3 win, Bavaro paired his touchdown with team-highs in receptions (five) and yards (67), helping the G-Men advance in the NFC’s Wild Card Round.
