Solidified already as one of his generation’s best tight ends, Vernon Davis knew that said reputation could only improve with a breakout showing during his first-ever postseason run. Deeming the term “breakout” to be an understatement, the two-time Pro Bowler got to work promptly, using his 4.38 40-yard dash time on a wheel route to produce a 73-yard touchdown. Recognizing the need for a second game-changing play, Davis — after a pre-snap motion that granted a free release — offered a mirrored image from the field’s other side, collecting a 28-yard score to put the 49ers ahead. San Francisco would fall 20-17 in Jan. 22, 2012’s NFC Championship Game against the New York Giants, but few, if any, shined brighter than Davis, who recorded a three-catch, 112-yard, two-touchdown evening.
