After watching the opposition go down and kick a field goal to take the lead in overtime, it was do-or-die time for Patrick Mahomes II and the Kansas City Chiefs when they took over at their own 25-yard line deep into Super Bowl LVIII. A field goal would tie the game, a touchdown would win it, but anything short of that would mean their season coming to an end without a title. After kicking things off with a handoff for a short gain, vintage end-game Mahomes took over. Over the course of seven long minutes, Mahomes and the Chiefs marched down the field little by little - a six-yard pass here, an eight-yard scramble there - slowly inching their way towards glory. After a 19-yard scramble - the longest play of the drive - got them into the red zone, and a short toss up the middle to his star tight end got them to a goal-to-go situation, the Chiefs were ready to strike with just six seconds left on the clock in the opening overtime period. Mahomes sent his receiver in motion, who then broke back to the outside when the ball was snapped, and Mahomes found him wide open for his eighth completion of the drive, and the Super Bowl-winning score. Mahomes would win Super Bowl LVIII MVP, the third of his career, for a sensational performance in which he racked up 333 passing yards and two scores through the air to go along with a team-leading 66 yards on the ground, as the Chiefs beat the 49ers in overtime, 25-22, on Feb. 11, 2024, for their third title in five years.
