(Jan 22, 1989 · Week 20)
With just over three minutes remaining in Super Bowl XXIII and the 49ers trailing Cincinnati by three, the San Francisco offense faced an uphill climb after a penalty set them up to start their final drive at their own eight-yard line. The 49ers had one major advantage, though, legendary quarterback Joe Montana. The 49ers started off the drive extremely, with Montana completing three straight passes to kick things off, and then after a couple run plays, completed two more to get into field goal range with about a minute-and-a-half to go in the game. Montana and the rest of the offense had bigger things on their mind, however. After a penalty sent them back to the Cincinnati 45-yard line, Montana completed two more passes to get into striking distance, and then, with just 34 seconds remaining in the game, he fired a 10-yard touchdown pass to give the 49ers their first lead of the second half. All told, Montana completed eight of nine passes on this drive, leading his team down the field for an unforgettable game-winning score. Montana finished this one with 357 passing yards and two touchdowns, as the 49ers beat the Bengals, 20-16, on Jan. 22, 1989.
